Buddy the Pug cross came into our care in October 2022 after being in the same home since a puppy, sadly his owner felt that she could no longer dedicate the time he needed due to her ill health.
Buddy is a very friendly, excitable little dog who adores affection from people he forms a bond with. He can be a little nervous of new people but if you have treats he will be your best friend immediately!
Buddy has missed out on early socialisation and can be easily overwhelmed in the big wide world, he very much looks for confidence from his humans. Buddy will require a patient owner to help him overcome any fears he may have and allow him the time to process in situations he may feel anxious in. Once Buddy has settled into home life again, we feel that he would benefit from working with a dog behaviourist/trainer. Buddy has been assessed by a behaviourist whilst in our care and under their guidance we have implemented LAT training, this is a positive reinforcement method that Buddy responds well to and can be discussed in more detail to any potential adopter. Buddy does show signs of fear reactivity, this is mainly towards dogs and previously towards men he didn't know, however, with this training technique we feel that Buddy has progressed tremendously and would urge Buddy's new owner/s to carry this on in the home.
Buddy does have some resource guarding issues around food and certain toys and for this reason we would ideally like Buddy's new owner to have an understanding of this issue and how to work with it.
Buddy walks lovely in a harness with no distractions, he is very responsive to training which makes him easy to work with. He travels well in a car so would be suitable to take to quieter areas for walks but he would need to be kept on a lead at all times.
Buddy is not currently clean in his kennel so he may initially need some help in his new home with house training and settling in to a new routine.
Due to Buddy's reactivity and fear related anxiety Buddy would be best suited to a home in a quiet rural area as it is likely that he will struggle in busy, built up areas.
Buddy requires a home with no other pets or children and would benefit from an owner/s that enjoys training and would be willing to work with his behavioural needs.
Putting Buddy's quirks aside he really is a lovely little dog who will make someone a great companion given the chance, all he needs is to build a bond with his new owner and for them to understand his needs, for that he will reward you with so much love!
